The coolant in the reservoir was bubbling because air was getting into the system AND boiling because it was overheating as well.
Read More2016-7-6 That doesn’t mean that the fan will cycle repeatedly as it should though. It may cycle through 18 times properly and on Number 19 may not kick on due to an electrical intermittent. That’s when the temp climbs and the boiling starts. It might not be a bad idea to check the cooling fan to see if it’s draggging and how much current it’s drawing.

Read More2016-7-18 The boiling only happens after he shuts off the vehicle. How could that be exhaust? Because the coolant is just below its boiling point while being circulated, but at shutdown, the “heat soak” raises the temperature to boiling (most likely near the exhaust manifold). The temp sensor is in a pocket of gasses and doesn’t reflect the true temp.
Read More2021-3-14 The boiling issue usually relates to the cylinder head gasket being compromised, however there are times where you have air being introduced into the coolant system and you are getting Apparently boiling – usually this problem goes away with repairing the cylinder heads, or repairing various components within the cooling system such as the water pump and the thermostat

Since you drove the car with the engine overheating, even for a short distance, it would be very prudent to change the oil again as soon as possible.
Read More2016-7-23 When the engine reaches a certain temperature, it opens allowing coolant to flow through the radiator and then to the motor. When this is not functioning properly, the result can be catastrophic overheating of your car’s engine. The fact that the coolant was boiling out of the reservoir cap suggests that the thermostat may be stuck closed.

Read More2017-9-11 The leak from the temp. sensors may be drawing air into the system when the vehicle cools, causing hot spots, boiling, vapor when the car is run again. You may have clogs in the radiator in some places, causing it to boil into the reservoir. The coolant/water ratio may be improper, changing the specific gravity of the mixture and thus boiling.

However, the system is pressurized and should not boil unless the engine has reached around 260F degrees, under normal conditions.

Check the radiator cap to see if the seal is torn or if the release valve inside the cap has failed or is sticking open. A radiator cap can cause the system to boil and spit out all of the coolant.
