Mining is by conventional opencast methods. The Thabazimbi mine produces primarily high-grade haematite ore with >62% Fe content. Kumba's port operations are in Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape Province. Saldanha Bay is the only dedicated iron ore export facility in South Africa and is larger than South Africa's other four major ports combined.
